Martha Wainwright “Proserpina” Music Video Out

The first video off of Martha Wainwright’s new album, Come Home to Mama, was released last week.

It’s “Proserpina.” It’s a cover of the last song her mother, Kate McGarrigle, wrote.

The video was directed by Mattu Placek and is laid out like a Woody Allen film. It delves into the life and death of nature.

Wainwright commented on the song.

“”Proserpina” is the only cover on the album, and it’s the last song that my mother wrote; obviously she knew that she was in the last stages of her life. Kate started writing the song in the fall of 2009 for the McGarrigle/Wainwright Christmas Concert at Royal Albert Hall. It was to be the last performance of her life. Proserpina, otherwise known as Prosephine, describes the advent of spring. It is a story about the life and death of nature. When Persephone’s mother, Ceres, tried to get her back from the underworld, she makes the earth cold and kills everything, which is why we have winter. The song is amazing, in and of itself, and the fact that the song is from a mother to a daughter made it all the more relevant for me to sing.”
