Album Review: Come Home to Mama by Martha Wainwright

Album Review: Come Home to Mama by Martha Wainwright I’ve been well aware of the musical Wainwright family for quite sometime now, but this is the first actual Martha Wainwright record I’ve actually come across and listened to.

I don’t know why I am surprised but it’s actually pretty good and quite an experience.

The 10-track LP mixes folk, indie, pop and even a little hint of disco to make an eerie work of art.

She shows some impressive vocal range, it’s more thn evident on the first single off of her album, “Proserpina.” It’s the last song her mother, Kate McGarrigle, wrote. As you would expect, there is a lot of emotion evoked. It’s as close as a song could come to a movie epic.

Some of the good songs on the album include the aforementioned one as well as “I Wanna Make An Arrest,”"Four Black Sheep” and “Can You Believe It.”

The previous “hint of disco” that I mentioned pops up on “I Wanna Make An Arrest.” Definitely a dance song from Wainwright. It’s fun and almost has Michael Jackson-like beat behind some dark lyrics.

Come Home to Mama gets released on October 16th off of Cooperative Music.

I guess it’s time for me to get involved with the rest of her family.
