While Joseph Gordon-Levitt is on the movie poster (the title character) and appears in a large chunk of the Hesher movie trailer, it’s Devin Brochu, who plays T.J. that steals the show.
With the looks of a Justin Bieber, the anger of the Hulk and the heart of a champion, Brochu outperformed Gordon-Levitt and their fellow co-star, Natalie Portman (Nicole).
T.J. and his dad played by Rainn Wilson are forced to deal with grief of losing their mother/wife in a car accident. While both decide to deal with the grief in different ways, it’s Hesher that brings the two together in his own insane, maniacal way.
Hesher doesn’t do much helping around the house but does help T.J. deal with the doldrums resulted from a school bully and even develops a friendship with T.J.’s grandmother.
While Gordon-Levitt ties the movie together making you feel like you didn’t waste your $13 bucks, there is a gaping whole in the writing of the film.
It’s never explained why Hesher, who just sought a place to freeload from, develops a connection with T.J. We all just want someone to love and have that reciprocated but Hesher lives out of his van and loves to blow shit up, why would he care about two depressed people who would only bring him down?
Gripes aside the film is definitely worth a viewing, why you ask? The Metallica heavy soundtrack, Portman wearing grandma eye glasses and Gordon-Levitt going to extremes he probably won’t ever reach in cinema ever again.
