New York Mets 2010 April Summary Report

It’s only the end of April and yes, everyone is still in it obviously but its better to hang with the boys than try and come from behind and that’s what the New York Mets are doing.

On April 28, with only one game left in the month, the Mets are 13-9 after a seven-game winning streak, a half game in front of the Philadelphia Phillies for first place. At this time last year, the Mets were struggling. They were in fourth place at 9-11, three games behind first place in the National League East.

Like any team with the season just starting, the Mets are having ups and downs and some are still trying to get that spring training rust off. The newly acquired Jason Bay is batting a mere .269. Jose Reyes is struggling. He’s played 18 of the 22 games but is only batting .240. He’s got five walks in 75 at-bats. His on-base percentage (OBP) is only .301. For the Mets to continue success, Reyes’ OBP should be over .400. The Mets don’t just have a few question marks at the plate, there are some lingering problems on the mound for them too. John Maine is only 1-1 with a whopping 7.15 earned-run average (ERA). In only 22.2 innings of work, he’s given up 29 hits, 18 earned-runs and 13 walks.

But it’s not all bad news for the ‘Amazin’s,’ they wouldn’t be in first place if it was. David Wright is starting to get hot with his bat, leading the team with 14 runs-batted in along with three home runs. The Mets also have a solid 1-2 punch with Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana on the mound. Pelfrey is 4-0 and with only a 0.69 ERA. He’s only given up two runs in 26 innings pitched. Meanwhile Santana is 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA.

The Mets seemed to turn things around when they called up Ike Davis up from the minors. In the 10 games he’s played since being called up, he’s hit .355 and a game-winning home run to go along with that.

The Mets have always had a prospect to come up to the majors and help them win some games. If the rookies like Davis keep the production coming, along with their usual stars, it will be the icing on the cake made by Santana and Pelfrey.
