Free Live Music in New York

South Street Seaport Music FestivalSummer is officially here! Which spells street fairs, picnics and music in the streets! Tons and tons of music.

Being out and about in New York City in the summertime can be incredibly expensive. The party will start early but that doesn’t mean you have bring your bank account down to zero.

There are loads of music concerts throughout New York that don’t cost any money at all.

Central Park SummerStage: Shows go on at Rumsey Playfied in Central Park all summer, on 5th Avenue by 69th street. It goes from June 1st through September 26th. There over 30 concerts that are free. Though admission is free, it can get extremely crowded. Seating is done on a first-come first-serve basis. I would get there early, the gates open up 60 minutes before the show goes down. The music goes down rain or shine, so you’re destined for a good time. The only downside is you can’t bring any alcohol and they frown on professional camera equipment but personal cameras are acceptable. Site Location: summerstage.org

Seaport Music Festival: Down by Pier 17, the South Street Seaport is another place to find free music in New York City. The shows go on all summer. You won’t find any mainstream acts at the Seaport but there is no better way to find out about great new bands while catching fresh breezes off the water. Site Location: seaportmusicfestival.com

Governors Island: This a great venue to find bigger names for free. Bands like Roseanne Cash (Johnny Cash’s daughter) and She and Him have performed there free of charge. You can only get there by boat, you can catch ferries from the Battery Maritime Building in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 on Saturdays and Sundays only, obviously out of Brooklyn. Enjoy the free music and great vibes the New York way.
