Album Review: Wide Open by Latch Key Kid

Latch Key KidYou’d think with a name like Latch Key Kid that that the music would be doused in depression because they’re getting no love from their parents. Surprisingly the Wide Open EP from Latch Key Kid ( real name, Gavin Heaney) is anything but.

Exuding nothing but positivity and love, you could call him more of a world music version of Jack Johnson or a bi-product of The Beach Boys and The Ventures.

The six-track EP boasts acoustic stylings matched with vocals that just make you think of Coronas and days on the beach. Yeah, winter is right around the corner but maybe we could all use a little more acoustic guitar to keep the dreariness away.

It’s hard to call Latch Key Kid a rising star, his music has been in such star-filled movies like “I Love You, Man” as well as shows, “The Hills” and “Heroes.” An undiscovered talent would be a more suitable term for the California native.

The best track on the EP is “Summer Girl.” A song full of emotion and great guitar that you can’t just help but get caught up in the surf-rocking melodies.

I’m sure we haven’t heard the last from Latch Key Kid, even at age 34. He’s a talented individual who can even rock a mandolin aside from the usual guitar and drums.
