We couldn’t go on this week without commenting on the Steve Carell situation, confirming last week that he’ll be leaving “The Office” after this upcoming season, which will be his 7th with the show.
So obviously we have a special TV edition of the Movie Section.
His departure will undoubtedly raise questions like, will the show survive? If it does, will it still be funny? Well before those questions can be answered, you must answer this question first, who should replace Steve Carell on “The Office”? We’ve compiled a list of five funny people that could bring a different dynamic to the show, or help maintain its strength and loyal audience.
Craig Robinson: He’s an obvious choice for obvious reasons. Robinson’s character, Darryl Philbin, is always complaining on how things are run in the office and constantly suggests better ways to do things. Daryl is an ambitious fellow who’s always out to make some money should the opportunity strike. He’s also one of, if not the most, funniest characters on the show. Jim and Pam may be dull; Dwight and Michael might not have the awkward relationship anymore, but Darryl, should he take over the office, could start some interesting wars between the warehouse workers and the rest of the cast.
Ricky Gervais: He’s another great choice because he could keep the same antics going on an ‘interim’ basis while the show takes the time to seriously analyze all the actors possible to replace Michael Scott on a full-time basis. It would be really funny if David Brent (Gervais’ character from the British “Office”) was transferred to Scranton to run things. Brent could get competitive and try to out due Scott’s reputation. A lot of interesting things could arise from Gervais being involved, especially if he took another worker from the British “Office” with him.
Robin Williams: Believe it or not, he would be a perfect fit for the “The Office.” He could actually take the goofiness Michael Scott brought to the table up a notch. Williams hasn’t been doing much lately in the film world and this could be the perfect thing to resurrect his career.
Zach Galifianakis: I know, I know, this would be a long-shot. Galifianakis has become incredibly busy with his film career taking off. However, Galifianakis could bring something extreme to the “The Office” that it’s sorely missing over there in Scranton. I’m sure he’d like to build a new wolf pack too.
Michael Cera: The writers could have a lot of fun having Cera come in and run things. People have a hard time taking orders from a younger ‘pip-squeak’ type. He’s used to TV too; working on “Arrested Development,” Cera could dust off the rust and easily having people laughing.
Nearly making the top 5 list for Steve Carell replacements was Seth Meyers. He’s got the same look as a ‘Jim’ or a ‘Ryan.’
Who do you think would be a suitable replacement for Steve Carell?
