Try to stray from constantly checking your phone while watching “Grown Ups,” you just might miss the actual message being delivered between all the cheap laughs that go on during the film.
“Grown Ups,” directed by Dennis Dugan, with a co-writing credit to Adam Sandler, is about old childhood friends reconnecting with each other while teaching their children how to have a good time the way they once did without any snazzy electronics like video games or iPods.
Sandler must have been wanting to tell the world we’re too dependent on technology really badly. The film was produced by his company, Happy Madison Productions, and as I mentioned he co-wrote it (smart man, make some money doing it). Luckily it wasn’t overbearing or preachy. The movie is incredibly funny and did it without any fabulous 3-D effects.
All of his old SNL buddies, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider come together in the film, along with Kevin James for a lot of one-liners and kick-to-the groin jokes. In a world of 3-D profusion, it’s nice to finally see a film where you don’t need 3-D glasses or pay 20 bucks to see. The acting isn’t great as most Sandler movies aren’t but it’s good old fashion fun as always.
The script isn’t far-fetched and is easy for the audience to absorb. “Grown Ups” is a feel-good movie. Chris Rock is actually enjoyable and doesn’t have any profanity laced diatribes.
You might find yourself hankering to hit-up a water park after viewing “Grown Ups,” I know I do. You’ll also notice other former SNL members in Colin Quinn, Maya Rudolph, and Tim Meadows.
